Programme Description
The Virtual Instructional Leadership (VIL) course is designed to support principals’ management and supervision of teachers using e-learning platforms. It provides a strong foundation for teaching with technology and explores online teaching design and delivery while providing strategies for instructional supervision and management and sustainability of the school’s e-infrastructure.
Programme Objectives
The content of the course, resources and activities are designed to respond to all the dimensions and features of instructional leadership in a technologically mediated environment.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- use digital collaborative tools to enhance administrative duties from a distance;
- develop accountability systems to guide virtual engagement and supervision of staff;
- make educated decisions about the adoption of Virtual Learning Environments and digital tools to support teaching and learning in their respective contexts;
- coach their staff members on the use of a selected online platform to enhance students’ learning experiences;
- link new understanding to the National Standards Curriculum and School Improvement Framework; and
- explain the Fourth Industrial Revolution and how this phenomenon impacts educational processes in their schools.
Admission Requirements
The course is open to all principals and vice principals of all public and independent early childhood, primary and secondary level schools, as well as Education Officers.
Programme Delivery
This free online course is asynchronous in delivery and can be accessed through the College’s Learning Management System.
Programme Structure
This course consists of seven modules with one of the seven having two parts.

Leading with Care: Maslow Before Bloom | This module explores the mental health and psychosocial considerations that principals need to prioritize in leading during times of crisis. |
Education for the Fourth Industrial Revolution | This module explores the disruptive changes underway in science and culture as a consequence of the 4IR and their impact on education processes. |
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) | This module introduces virtual learning environments and explores those commonly used by principals in Jamaica including Moodle, Edmodo, Schoology, and Google Classroom. |
Creating E-learning Experiences I: Social Learning Platforms | This module uses tutorials specific to the VLEs selected by the participants to develop their skills in creating e-learning experiences for their students. |
Creating E-learning Experiences II: Digital Tools | This module explores various digital classroom tools for teachers and students. It supports flipped classrooms, game-based learning, and other forms of digital assessment. |
Collaborative Tools for School Administrators | This module introduces participants to a wide variety of digital tools that will enhance administrative duties from a distance. |
Managing Remote Employees | This module explores common challenges associated with remote work while supporting the principals in developing accountability systems to guide virtual engagement. |
Programme Administrator
Sutana Hemans is one of the College’s strategic and adept Programmes Administrators who has obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Marketing from the University of the Common Wealth Caribbean. She provides a range of administrative duties for the effective operation of the Division of Programmes.
