Ms. Merris Murray

Merris Murray is a teacher by profession. She received her formal training at Joseph’s Teachers’ College where she pursued a certificate in teacher education. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from the University of the West Indies Mona, a Masters in Business Administration from the Nova Southeastern University and a post graduate diploma in Public Sector Management from the Management Institute for National Development (MIND).

Miss Murray has taught at various levels of the education system. She has an intimate knowledge of the small to medium enterprise sector having worked at the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and the Micro Investment Development Agency (MIDA) for extended periods. Her business acumen was honed not only from academic pursuits but also from cross-cultural experiences in Japan, Israel and North America.

For the past fourteen years she has been involved in the administration of educational institutions. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Early Childhood Commission and became its first Executive Director in 2004.

Miss Murray is currently the Executive Director of the National Council on Education, a statutory body with responsibility for ensuring the effective governance of public educational institutions in Jamaica. Her work at the Council entails nominating for appointment fit and proper persons to serve on school boards and developing collateral materials to support the training of school board members. Some of Miss Murray’s recent accomplishments include co-ordinating the completion of a comprehensive handbook and the development of a modular training programme for school boards. She has made several presentations on school governance at local and regional conferences. She is an avid reader and enjoys all types of music and nature walks.
